Ten Hag again calls for bigger squad

Erik ten Hag claims his "vulnerable" Manchester United squad needs reinforcement.

The Dutchman believes United can now "beat anyone" - thanks to new boys Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee.

But Ten Hag fears injuries would change all that.

He said: "I want the squad as strong as possible.

"We already made two very good buys, so when everyone is fit we have a team that can beat everyone.

"But when we have injuries, we are vulnerable.

"We are looking in all the positions to reinforce. We need a plan with the squad to make sure we are occupied in every area.

"With squad depth, we need to catch up because last season we had injuries. This season will be survival of the fittest."

However, the former Lecce midfielder is under contract until 2028 and Sporting are determined to keep him.

Erik has '100% faith in Marcus'

Erik ten Hag is convinced Marcus Rashford will return to his 30-goal form of two seasons ago.

And the Manchester United manager is equally sure new coach Ruud van Nistelrooy can show him how.

Ten Hag said: “That is the reason why he is here.

“But not only for the strikers, he is much more than this but Rashford can only improve himself.

“He is capable, he scores so many goals and at a relative young age, so many goals, so he is capable of it.

“I am confident and have 100 per cent belief he can do the same as two years ago.”

    Ten Hag challenges Rashford

Marcus Rashford has been challenged to return to his career-best goal-scoring levels as Manchester United enter a new era, writes NEIL CUSTIS.

Rashford, 26, has already been working with club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy to find his form again in front of goal.

Red Devils' strike legend Van Nistelrooy was brought onto the club's new coaching team to get the team finding the net again.

Rashford certainly needs to do that, having dropped from figures of 30 goals two seasons ago to eight last season.

That resulted in him losing his first-team place with United and being left out of Gareth Southgate’s England Eurosquad.

Manager Erik ten Hag says it isultimately down to the players but is convinced Van Nistelrooy could be a key figure in him getting back to his best.

But deals for two players regarded as equally major targets have proved more tricky to tie up.

And Everton are holding out for a huge sum for England ace Jarrad Branthwaite.

NowO Jogo claim the Red Devils are tracking Silva - after the 20-year-old's brilliant 2023-24 club season.

The Portuguese outlet suggest Benfica might be prepared to sell him for half of his £42million release clause.

Man Utd & Arsenal face tough task to land Zubimendi

Prem giants are braced for disappointment if they pursue Martin Zubimendi.

Manchester United and especially Arsenal have reportedly been eyeing Real Sociedad's Spain midfielder.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have also been mentioned over the 25-year-old.

But GIVEMESPORT believe Zubimendi is more than happy at Sociedad.

The one-club man is under contract until 2027, with a release clause of £51million.

And it's reckoned Zubimendi will not look to leave Sociedad.

That means any move would probably depend on the LaLiga club accepting a sizeable offer.

    More from Maguire

After last season's FA Cup Final victory, which Harry Maguire missed through injury, Manchester United players did not know if they were going to a post-match celebration or Erik ten Hag’s farewell.

It was so strange. No one really knew what was going on. No one had assurance.

If you asked the players, they’ll probably just say they didn’t really know because no one really had a clue.

But, it was really impressive with the way that he handled that week and took them out with a victory against probably the best team in Europe at the moment.

    Maguire on Ten Hag

Manchester United ace Harry Maguire believes the uncertainty over Erik ten Hag’s future was the reason for the team's worst finish in the history of the Premier League.

Yeah, it was tough, some of the things that came out in the lead up to the Cup final were really poor, I felt.

He handled it brilliantly, to be honest, he just took each day as it comes. From us players, we didn’t see anything different in the manager, so credit to him for the way he handled it. And all his staff as well.

There was so much uncertainty around the club. Especially the staff, the manager, all of the other staff as well around the club, they didn’t know what was happening the following year. It was tough.

It probably did damage our performances and results throughout the season maybe a little bit. Especially when it happened around that Christmas period when we really did fall off.

But credit to the manager, the way that he handled it. To have the lead up in the way that he did and to produce a performance like we did in the cup final and turn things around was really impressive.
